The kitchen is often referred to as “the hub of the home” as this is typically the room where families and friends spend a great deal of time together. Whether you have regular family dinners, host get-togethers throughout the year or you simply need more space for cooking, there are several ways you can make your kitchen appear larger without spending thousands of dollars.
Use One Paint Color
Visual boundaries are limited when one color is used for both the cabinetry and the wall. Typically, when the cabinets are a completely different hue than the walls, there are more edges which makes the room appear much smaller. Lighter colors tend to brighten the room and reflect natural light, tricking the eye into making the kitchen appear larger than it is. Don’t be afraid to work with some deeper tones like charcoal, maroon or navy blue, as these give off the impression that the walls are pushed farther back.
Opt for Smaller Furniture
While you may be eyeing a large oak dining table, this may not be the best option for a small kitchen. Furnish your kitchen with a small island, slim bar stools or a narrow table. Be sure to avoid clunky furniture such as tables with thick legs or chairs with large backs.
Replace Cabinet Doors with Glass Paneling
Another way to make your walls feel farther away is to replace the cabinet doors with glass. Your eyes will naturally look past the frames and into the cabinets. Additionally, glass cabinets will motivate you to keep your cabinets organized and without the added clutter, your kitchen appears more open.
Create a Vertical Path
By creating a vertical path for your eyes to follow, you’re lifting the height of the ceiling which eliminates the boxy feel in your kitchen. If you’re fortunate enough to have a soffit above your cabinets, add some accent pieces to create the same effect. This also allows you to have some fun with the room as you can jazz up space with decorative plates, floral arrangements or framed paintings.
Keep the Counter Space Open
Often a homeowner’s greatest hurdle is keeping the kitchen tidy, and due to clunky kitchen appliances, this can be difficult to achieve. Only keep standout items on the counters to avoid clutter and store larger items in another space. Although it’s convenient to have the toaster and blender out in the open, it can be a real eyesore.
